What is personal information?
Personal information is any information that can be used to identify you as an individual, including your income, credit records, and social insurance number. Your business title, business address, and business telephone number are not considered personal information.
You should understand that we may make reference calls or request written confirmation verifying your employment, income, status of your bank accounts, outstanding debts, and your history with prior landlords. When you apply for rental accommodation, you authorize us to collect this information at that time, as well as at any time during the course of our relationship.
Where do you get my personal information?
Most of the personal information that we collect comes from you when you fill out your rental application. However, by filling out the application, you consent to us contacting other parties to obtain additional information, such as references you provide, credit reporting agencies, and financial institutions.
Why do you collect personal information?
Given the nature of the landlord/tenant relationship, Realstar needs to collect and use your personal information for the day-to-day business of operating a rental property (that is, processing your rental application, collecting rent, enforcing the rental agreement, tax reporting and, possibly, reporting to insurers). If you provide us with your social insurance number, we may use it to ensure the accurate matching of your credit history file in our inquiries with credit reporting agencies.
Will my personal information be used for any other purposes?
Personal information, such as name, unit number and rent, may be disclosed, from time to time, to a local housing authority, lenders or prospective purchasers, or to third parties, as required by law. If we plan to use your personal information for any other purpose, we will contact you to obtain your consent.
Can I refuse to give my personal information?
The choice to provide us with personal information is always yours. However, your decision to withhold particular details may limit our ability to assess your application. For example, if we are unable to conduct a credit check while processing your application, we may have no choice but to refuse the application.
Is my personal information safe?
All personal information is stored and safeguarded in a manner consistent with its level of sensitivity and which preserves your privacy.
Can I access my personal information?
You have the right to request to see the personal information in your file at any time. You may review its content and accuracy, and ask us to amend it, as appropriate. We may only refuse access as authorized by law and, in such an event, will provide you with written reasons for refusing your request.
